CONNECTING OUR climate
and our water
Where do we get our water from?
To understand how vital the environment is to our supply of water it’s important to understand where our water comes from in the first place.
71% of the earth’s surface is covered in water, so why should we care about water consumption?
97% of the Earth's water is salt water, and out of the 2.5% of freshwater, much is locked up in glaciers, ice caps and underground. Only 1% of freshwater is readily available.
WHY CARE ABOUT WATER AND THE ENVIRONMENT?
CONSERVATION
Across the UK there are countless examples of habitats which depend on freshwater sources. By managing water sustainably, we have a better chance at saving these habitats for future generations.
ECONOMY
Economic growth can only happen where there is a robust water supply. We need water to support new housing and industry, while also maintaining supply to all the properties we already have.
FOOD SECURITY
Water is a vital ingredient in food production. Crops can be badly affected when there is a drought, so we must make sure we have enough water to secure food production into the future.
